Blouse vs Shirt: Structure, Drape and a Fading Distinction

A shirt is structured, with a stiffened collar, buttoned cuffs and a straight cut, while a blouse is looser and softer, designed to drape, often without a collar or fastening at all.

The distinction used to be strict and is now mostly a tendency. It still predicts behaviour, though: a shirt tucks and holds a line, a blouse does not.

How to tell them apart in a photo

Hold it by the collar. If the collar stands up on its own, it is a shirt.

Which one should you pick

Shirt

Under a blazer, or anywhere you need a crisp line.

Blouse

When the top is the focus and you want movement in the fabric.

Questions people actually ask

Is a button down always a shirt?

Button down strictly means the collar points button to the body, which is a shirt detail. Most people use it to mean any buttoned front, blouses included.

Why is blouse a womenswear word?

It did not start that way. Blouse meant a loose overgarment worn by workers and soldiers, and military uniform jackets were called blouses well into the twentieth century. The word narrowed as menswear standardised around the fitted shirt and womenswear kept the looser shape.

Is a shirt dress a shirt?

In construction, yes. Collar, front placket, cuffs and a yoke, just extended past the hip. It behaves like a shirt too, holding a line and taking a belt well. A dress with a soft neckline and no placket is a dress, whatever the length.

What is a shell top?

A sleeveless woven top with no collar and usually no fastening, cut to sit smoothly under a blazer. It sits on the blouse side of the line, since it drapes and has no structure, and it is the garment most often mislabelled as a blouse in office wardrobes.
