These tops are separated by two measurements: how wide the strap is and how high the hem sits. Everything else is fabric.
A wider strap covers a bra band and reads as daywear. A spaghetti strap does not, so it usually needs something over it.

Raise both arms and watch the hem
Cropped hems move far more than the product photo suggests. Standing still, the hem sits exactly where it was styled. Reach for a high shelf and it climbs, sometimes several centimetres, and it does not always drop back down. Test it at the mirror: arms up, arms down, then look again without tugging anything into place. Where it settles by itself is the real length of the top.
Fabric decides how much of that you get. Ribbed cotton with a little elastane grips the ribcage and returns to position, while thin single jersey slides up and stays there. Boxy woven crops hardly move at the hem at all but swing away from the body and open at the sides. Choose according to whether the day involves a desk or a crowded room with your arms up.
What the armhole shows when you move
Deep armholes on tanks and vests look relaxed on the rail and open wide the moment your arm goes forward. Lift your elbow to shoulder height and check the side view in the mirror. Whatever is visible to you standing in a quiet fitting room is visible to everyone across a table, and a bra band sitting below the armhole is the usual unwelcome surprise.
Shoulder seam position tells you whether the size is right before anything else does. On a fitted tank, that seam belongs on the bone at the top of your shoulder. Sitting inboard of it means the top is small and will pull across the chest all day. Hanging down your arm means the armhole gapes no matter how well the body of the top fits.
