Leggings vs Tights vs Yoga Pants: Opacity and Purpose

Leggings are opaque, footless and thick enough to be worn as trousers on their own; tights are sheer, footed and designed to be worn under a dress or skirt; yoga pants are leggings built for movement, with a thicker waistband and technical fabric.

The line here is opacity, and the test is unglamorous but reliable: bend over in front of a mirror. If the fabric goes translucent under stretch, it is not doing the job of a trouser.

How to tell them apart in a photo

Denier tells you before you buy. Under about 40 denier you are holding tights. Leggings are usually well over 200.

Which one should you pick

Leggings

Under a tunic or long jumper, or as everyday trousers if the fabric is genuinely opaque.

Yoga pants

Anything involving movement, where the waistband matters more than the look.

Questions people actually ask

Are leggings trousers?

Functionally yes, if they are opaque and the seams are flat. The objection is usually about fit, not category.

Are jeggings leggings?

Functionally yes. Jeggings are leggings knitted or printed to imitate denim, sometimes with fake pockets and a real fly. They stretch and pull on like leggings, so they answer to the same opacity test. Real stretch jeans have a woven construction and behave differently.

Can opaque tights replace leggings?

For warmth under a skirt, yes. As a standalone trouser, no. Hosiery is knitted fine enough to ladder from a fingernail and has no seams built for friction at the inner thigh, so it wears through quickly if you treat it as outerwear.

What are stirrup leggings?

Leggings with a strap under the arch of the foot, so they stay pulled down inside boots or shoes. They come back into fashion every decade or so. Dancers never stopped wearing them, since the strap keeps the line of the leg unbroken.
