Parachute Pants, Corduroy and Capris: The Textured Trousers

These three have nothing in common except that each is defined by something other than its cut. Parachute pants by the nylon and the cinch cords, corduroy by the wale, capris by where they stop.

What technical nylon actually feels like

Parachute trousers are cut from tightly woven nylon, and that fabric does not breathe much. In a warm room you notice it behind the knees first. Weight makes the difference: heavier ripstop stands away from the leg and lets air move, while thin slippery nylon sits against the skin. Rustle comes with the territory too, and some weaves are loud enough to hear across a quiet office.

Cords and toggles set the entire silhouette, so test them properly. Pull the hem cinch tight and the leg balloons above the ankle; leave it open and the hem puddles on the ground and frays at the back. Cinch it fully, then walk the length of the shop. Cords that loosen by themselves under movement mean a weak toggle and a hem that will drag home wet.

Where corduroy gives out first

Nap is the part that fails. Corduroy wears flat at the seat, the front of the thighs and the inner leg where fabric rubs against itself, and crushed pile does not come back. Wide wale shows it sooner because more of each ridge is exposed. Run your palm along the fabric in both directions across the whole garment; new corduroy should feel equally plush everywhere you touch.

Weight is the second thing to check. Heavy cotton corduroy holds a proper trouser shape, but like any pure cotton it bags at the knee and does not recover between wearings the way wool does. Hanging the trousers by the waistband instead of folding them, and giving them a day off after each wear, keeps the knees from setting into a permanent bend.

Questions people actually ask

Are parachute pants back?

They returned through streetwear and stayed. The current version is tapered at the ankle instead of flared, and that is what keeps them from looking like a costume.

What is wale in corduroy?

The number of ridges per inch. A low wale means thick chunky ridges, a high wale means fine ones that read closer to a flat trouser.

Where should capris end on the leg?

Below the widest part of the calf, ideally at the narrow section just above the ankle. Hems that land on the fullest part of the calf cut the leg at its widest point and shorten it visually. Stand side on and slide the hem up and down to see it.

How do you wash corduroy without crushing the nap?

Turn the trousers inside out, wash cool and skip the tumble dryer. Press from the reverse side with steam only, because an iron on the face of the fabric flattens the ridges permanently. Brushing the pile gently while it is still damp lifts any patches gone shiny.
