Skirts are described by two independent things that get confused constantly: the shape and the length. A pencil skirt is a shape and can be any length. A midi is a length and can be any shape.
Knowing which word you are actually looking for makes shopping far less frustrating.

Examples from the blog
Does it rotate while you walk?
Skirts that spin around the body are usually not badly sewn. What happens is that the waistband fits and the hip does not, so the skirt rides on your widest point and drifts as you move. Note where the side seam sits, walk thirty steps, and look again. Buying a size up rarely fixes this. A different shape, or a waistband that sits higher, usually does.
Waistband height matters more than the label size. Bands that sit at your natural waist, just above the hip bones, have a narrowing to hold onto. Bands that sit low on the hip rely on friction alone and slide down all day, especially in satin and other slippery fabrics. Sit for a minute, stand up without adjusting anything, and see where the band has ended up.
Vents, linings and how far you can step
Straight skirts limit your stride by design, and the vent decides by how much. Stand in the fitting room and take the longest step you would take crossing a road on a green light. If the vent opens to the top of its stitching and the fabric pulls across the thighs, the skirt is too narrow for ordinary walking, never mind catching a train.
Lining does quiet work that shows up immediately when it is missing. Unlined wool and tweed cling to tights and ride up at the back with every step. Unlined cotton twill creases behind the knee and stays creased. Slip a hand inside and check for a separate layer attached at the waist and hanging free at the hem. That free hem means the skirt was built to move.
| Length | Hem sits | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| Mini | Mid thigh | Casual or going out |
| Knee | At or just over the knee | Office, conservative |
| Midi | Mid calf | Current, works most places |
| Maxi | Ankle or floor | Relaxed or formal, depending on fabric |

Questions people actually ask
Is a pencil skirt a length or a shape?
A shape. It is straight and narrow to the hem, usually knee length, but the defining feature is the narrowing, not where it stops.
What makes a midi tricky to wear?
It cuts the leg at the widest part of the calf. A heel or a pointed shoe restores the line.
How tight should a waistband be?
Two fingers should slide flat between the band and your body while you stand. Sit down and check again, because your waist expands when you do, and again after a meal. Waistbands that only work standing up are the ones quietly unbuttoned under the table.
Why does my skirt crease across the back?
Sitting compresses the cloth over the seat, and light or unlined fabric keeps those folds. Wool recovers overnight on a hanger, while cotton and linen mostly do not. Lining helps because the outer fabric slides across it instead of being dragged and folded against you.
