A tuxedo has satin facings on the lapels and a satin stripe down the outside of each trouser leg; a suit has neither. That trim is the entire difference, and it is what makes a tuxedo evening wear and a suit daywear.
People assume a tuxedo is simply a more expensive suit. It is not. It is a different garment with a different job, and an expensive suit is still a suit when the invitation says black tie.

| Suit | Tuxedo | |
|---|---|---|
| Lapel | Same fabric as the jacket | Satin or grosgrain facing |
| Trouser | Plain leg | Satin stripe down the side |
| Buttons | Matching the cloth | Covered in satin |
| Shirt | Standard, any collar | Pleated or pique front, turndown collar |
| Neckwear | Tie, optional | Bow tie |
| Worn | Day or evening | Evening only |
How to tell them apart in a photo
Look at the lapel first. If it catches the light differently from the rest of the jacket, it is a tuxedo. If the whole jacket is one matte surface, it is a suit.
The trouser confirms it. A satin stripe running from hip to hem is on no suit ever made.
Which one should you pick
Wear a tuxedo when
The invitation says black tie, or the event starts after six in the evening and is formal enough that people will be photographed.
Wear a suit when
It says business, cocktail, semi-formal or black tie optional. In the last case a dark suit is a legitimate choice, not a compromise.

Questions people actually ask
Is a black suit acceptable at a black tie wedding?
It is tolerated, not correct. If you own or can hire a tuxedo, the photographs will show the difference.
What is a dinner jacket?
In British English it is the tuxedo. The garment is the same, only the name changed across the Atlantic.
Does a tuxedo have to be black?
No. Midnight blue is equally traditional and many tailors prefer it, because under artificial light a very dark blue reads blacker than black cloth does. Black and midnight blue are the only two shades that count as conventional; anything else is a creative choice, not a formal one.
Why do tuxedo trousers have no belt loops?
Evening trousers are held up by side adjusters or braces, never a belt. A belt buckle interrupts the line at the waist and competes with the cummerbund or waistcoat that is supposed to cover it. If your hired trousers have loops, leave them empty.
Can people actually tell a tuxedo from a black suit?
In a small gathering, yes, within about a minute. In a crowded room lit low, probably not until the photographs come back, where the satin catches flash and plain wool does not. Nobody says anything either way, so the cost is a mild flatness in pictures you keep.
